Wildlife Biologist Destin Harrell presents “Prairie Dogs: Ecosystem Engineers at our Draper Natural History Museum Lunchtime Expedition.
In the Bighorn Basin, the White-tailed Prairie Dog builds a foundation for the diverse sagebrush-steppe ecosystem. We explore population trends and the many animals linked to the habitat they produce. Prairie dogs are usually labeled a couple different ways; either as a pest or keystone species. They can be both. The perspective depends on values. With appropriate management, there can be room for both perspectives in an effort to coexist with this animal that anchors animal communities across the vast basins and plains of the American West.
